A fellow co-worker (whose involved with his church's youth group) seems to having issues or concerns regarding a Christian metal band - Demon Hunter.

He asked me to check them out and let him know what my thoughts are. (Which I'll do on my own).

I am interested in hearing what you think of this here at TheOoze.

    Thoughts?

Well, my friend didn't want to get into much (any!) details.
He wanted to know my thoughts completely unbiased.

I hadn't heard of them before but you piqued my interest and I thought I'd do some digging.

Urban Dictionary has a few pretty tame entries for them. It's a snarky site but I've also found it to be brutally honest about local celebrities/musicians so I'd keep an eye on it in the future.

The comments on this youtube video might be of interest as well. Yes, I know that youtube comments tend to wade in the shallow end of the intelligence/human decency/good manners pool...but sometimes they also speak the truth (albeit in a very crude manner).

Finally, this site has a discussion going on about this band by some local fans.

Hopefully someone with firsthand knowledge of whatever is going on will stop by soon. No, I won't ask you for details. I don't know anyone involved and it's none of my business. :)

    :)

(My friend's a Charismatic Born-Again - but an okay one! ;) I'm trying to see it from his point of view - a very difficult thing for me to imagine btw. It's a position I really don't like nor agree with).

Outside of the fact of subjective tastes, I don't see any issues with the band or their music. I'm leaning more towards a different direction with this whole thing.

(Ever see the movie The Big Kahuna?) Should Christians be using platforms (in this case the band or the music industry) to 'sell their wares'?

Is there a difference between a Christian who makes music (i.e. Owl City) and a Christian band? (Well, of course there's a difference! But should there be?)

I have found many non-Christian bands have stronger 'Christian' messages. One of my favourite examples is Evanescence's Bring me to Life. (Imagine in the song she's not singing to another person but God or Jesus).

The first song I came across was "Collapsing". I was fairly impressed with the quality. I think I expected that the lyrics would be hard to distinguish, (which kind of gets in the way of a Christian artist getting their message across) but it was very good.

I think Christianity, all sorts, has failed to allow for young men to express themselves in ways which are not "traditional". I think this qualifies.

I have other thoughts, but I'm running out the door. All in all, it was refreshing to hear some Christian music which isn't a love song to God.

    They're pretty tame.
For the truth that lies at the heart of theology is not something there to be discovered, but something, or rather someone, to whom we must surrender. The mystery of faith is not ultimately something that invites our questioning, but something that questions us. --Andrew Louth, Discerning the Mystery

Heh, I didn't even think about listening to their music when first replying to this thread.

It's not a genre of music I typically listen to but "Dead Flowers" had some interesting lyrics. You're right, @MJG791, in that their lyrics are more subtle than a lot of other Christian bands. I can definitely see how their faith has influenced what they write about but it's not the typical "Jesus Is My Boyfriend" stuff. :P
